Once every fifty years, a vast palatial hall, filled with rows of velvet seats that stretch into the distance as far as the eye can see, plays host to the Epic of the Enchanted Garden. The celebration starts at dusk and continues all the way through until dawn, delving into the secret history of the Enchanted Garden, ensuring that its stories and memories are passed on from one generation to the next. Before the gathered thousands, jugglers, acrobats, dancers and conjurers all take part in a whirling prelude to the magical night’s main event. The actors perform with immense skill, and it takes decades of training before they are able to act out their roles. For a whole fortnight, thespians are made-up by the legions of attendants who craft their faces and bodies into the perfect representation of their roles. So demanding is the performance, and their faces are so skilfully altered by the make-up, that they actually transform into the very characters they are playing. To ensure the artists, tired from their ritual, can regain their equilibrium and natural looks, their bodies and faces are imbued with a potion of tremendous power, as soon as they leave the stage.
